Issue #758: Drop Out

The Not So Great Pretender

What is this man doing with a megaphone? Has Liberal Party Chairman James Tien, Hong Kong’s notorious champion of elitism and inequality, suddenly become a rabble-rousing champion of the people? Or does he just need the device to better berate the swinish multitudes for not being able to match his inherited wealth? Perhaps he’s concerned that his provocative pronouncements - “I don’t care about the poverty gap” - aren’t getting the audience they deserve?

Actually, after a closer look at this less than slick campaign ad, you have to ask whether that’s even the professional patronizer’s real hand holding the rather plebian tool in front of him. Isn’t the object just a tad too big relative to his whole upper body? And in this rare instance that precious mouth of his is hardly even open.

I’m not suggesting for a minute that there’s anything wrong with photo-shopping your propaganda posters. I just expected a party with campaign money to burn to come up with something a little more convincing, or even half dignified. But what would I know, I’m just a chicken.
