DAP JP

DAP JP

September 5th, 2008

The buzz: DAP JP is one of the first restaurants to open in the up-and-coming foodie hotspot QRE Plaza in Wan Chai, serving modern Japanese/European cuisine. This is the sister restaurant of local foodies’ favorite French restaurant, DAP, in Jordan.

The décor: Perched on the 24th floor, DAP JP takes full advantage of the view of Wan Chai and Kennedy Road with vast wraparound windows. Dark red banquettes, white leather seats, a piano and a full bar downstairs all serve to recall the supper clubs of a bygone era.

The drinks: The berry martini (fresh fruit only and no additional syrup) is one of the signature cocktails. Ben, the gregarious manager, also claims that their mojitos are the best in town.

The food: With everyone suffering from wagyu-beef fatigue, it was only a matter of time before some other animal became the new carne du jour. The latest thing is wagyu lamb (same treatment: fed on beer and massaged). On DAP JP’s on-trend menu, the meat is served on a bed of eggplant puree. Other items include a buttery and delicious black cod and a tender and flavorfully marinated tuna tataki. The catch of the day we had, a pan-fried black snapper, was crunchy and snappy, but it was the accompanying Dijon cream sauce that really stole the show.

Why you’ll come back: An innovative and well-executed menu, an attentive staff with an eye for detail and possibly one of the last places in town to toss a Caesar salad tableside, DAP JP has a certain charm that could potentially make it one of the new hotspots in town.

Japanese/European. 23/F, QRE Plaza, 202 Queen’s Rd. East, Wanchai, 2572-3228.
