Dear Mom...
April 24th, 2008Mother’s Day is coming on May 11, which means restaurants everywhere are going to be booked solid. Lena Kennedy has the lowdown on the best deals.
Skin Deep
So your mom is as wise as the ancient mountains, and her face is similarly craggy. Best treat her to a nourishing skin menu at T’ang Court. Her complexion (and yours too, incidentally) will thank you for the eight-course menu, which is full of skin-friendly nutrients such as Vitamin E, collagen and Omega 3. Dishes include stewed fine multi-grains served in ossein (the collagen part of the bone) and chicken stock. Minimum of two people at $1,000 each, and each table comes with a complimentary trial kit of Michael Kors Island Capri eau de parfum. Lunch 11am-3pm, Dinner 6pm-11pm.
T’ang Court, The Langham, 8 Peking Rd., Tsim Sha Tui, 2375-1133
Renaissance Woman
For a classic Mothers’ Day treat, head to the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel’s Lobby Lounge for the deluxe afternoon tea set. Indulge in smoked wild salmon and oscietra caviar, seared wagyu beef with glazed balsamic onion sandwiches, cranberry and raisin scones and rose cheesecake while sipping on a glass of Möet and Chandon Brut Rosé ($280 per person from 3pm-6pm). Or head upstairs to their modern Italian restaurant, Scala. In soft pastels and quiet tranquility, the place is perfect for nervy, Valium-addled moms, and they’re offering a four-course set menu that includes pan-seared scallops with broccoli purée and crisp fennel, as well as a lobster bisque with vanilla brandy cream (the lunch and dinner set meal is $480). And to top it off, all restaurants will be presenting all moms with a Crabtree and Evelyn gift.

Kicking it Old School
If mom is a true Hong Kong relic, take her to that old favorite, Jimmy’s Kitchen, for a blast from the past. A four-course meal at $398 per head includes delights like grilled Parma ham wrapped asparagus spears with poached egg and truffle topped with Hollandaise, or roasted Tasmanian ocean trout on a summer salad of shaved fennel, beetroot and sugar snaps. Don’t miss out on dessert – the renowned Pavlova with passion fruit, fresh strawberries and cream.

Red roses will be handed out to all moms as a special treat. DIY
Hey, she put the time and effort into making you, so you might as well put the smallest amount of effort into making something for her. But no need to attempt a barely edible on your single gas cooker. At Café on the Park’s lunch and dinner buffets, you can personalize the dessert (a “love cake,” no less) with a range of toppings and a personal message. Hey, at least it’s something somewhat personal. And if she’s a fish-lover, she’ll love the fresh seafood, sashimi and sushi on offer for lunch, tea, dinner, and late dinner buffets. Prices range from $188-$408 for adults; children $138-$288.
