Dried Out?
Dried Out?
November 24th, 2006Farah Master finds out how to save face and hair this winter.
Hong Kong is notorious for its lethal humidity. It’s that familiar, clammy blanket that snugly engulfs you the moment you step outside. With winter rapidly approaching we are rejoicing in the brief interlude that’s devoid of this sticky, sweaty sensation. Yet it’s easy to forget that Hong Kong’s dry city air can still be detrimental for our skin and hair Both men and women frequently suffer from dry, dull complexions, cracked hands and feet, and chapped lips. But you’re not powerless.
Saving Face
1. Sunblock in the winter? Yes! Though it’s colder outside, there are still plenty of UV rays beating down on your skin. Try Olay daily sensitive UV cream for $57.90, available at Wellcome and Mannings.
2. If you have dry skin, use a mild cleanser to wash your face. We recommend a gentle, water-soluble cleanser rather than soap as soap strips the skin’s natural oils. Try Clarins gentle foaming cleanser for $180. Available from the Clarins at IFC, Central, 2295- 0821.
3. A weekly facial mask helps boost your skin’s moisture. Facemasks allow your skin to be cleansed at a deep level, stripping the top layer of dead skin cells and leaving a fresher, brighter complexion. Try the No. 7 Intensive moisture mask for $240. Available from Boots at IFC, 2234-7431.
4. If you feel like luxury pampering, try one of the facial treatments at the Elemis Day Spa. They offer a range of different treatments including the “Exotic Cream Moisture Dew Facial,” which is suited to dry, thirsty skin in need of hydration. The 30-minute treatment is $880. Pampering Palms
The cool air can be particularly damaging to your hands. Protect your mitts this winter by using a daily hand cream. It prevents cracking and dryness, leaving your palms smooth and soft. Try L’Occitane’s hand cream ($190). It combines Shea butter, almond and coconut oil, creating a unique and deeply nourishing cream for the hands. Available at L’Occitane at IFC, 2234-7178.
Winterize Your Hair
Dry air can harm your hair, resulting in unnecessary breakages. Prevent excess breakage by using a moisturizing conditioner on a regular basis. For particularly dry or damaged hair, try Toni&Guy Insights Moisture Injection ($100).
Reducing Hair Dryness
➔ Wear a scarf or hat
➔ Limit your use of hot styling devices, such as straighteners and hair dryers
➔ Wash your hair less frequently, and use moisturizing shampoos
➔ Avoid washing your hair in hot water as it dehydrates and damages your hair unnecessarily
You Are What You Eat
Eating healthily can restore luster to your skin and hair, giving it a lift throughout the cold winter months. This doesn’t mean you have to forgo your normal diet. Instead, try incorporating these foods into your existing meals.
1. Oily fish. Salmon, tuna and fresh mackerel all contain essential fatty acids (EFAs) that help keep your skin moisturized.
2. Avocado. This vegetable is high in vitamin E and good monounsaturated fats, which are highly nourishing for your skin.
3. Nuts and seeds. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds, as well as almonds and walnuts, contain high amounts of vitamin A and C and act as antioxidants by protecting your body from sun damage and air pollutants.
4. Berries. Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are full of vitamins C and E. These help restore the skin’s collagen, keeping it smooth and supple.
5. Yogurt. This is full of good bacteria that aids digestion, improving overall skin quality.
6. Spinach is bursting with vitamins A, C and E. The high iron content of spinach is great for keeping your skin healthy and glowing.
7. Wholegrains, such as brown bread and wholemeal pasta, are full of fiber and iron. The fiber helps rid your body of toxins, leaving your skin clear and fresh.
8. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and kiwis, are full of vitamin C. They are great for replenishing dry, patchy skin.
9. Mango contains the nutrient beta-carotene. This is converted by your body into vitamin A, which is essential for healthy skin. ■
