Duke’s Deli
Duke’s Deli
November 7th, 2008The buzz: From the owners of Duke’s Burger comes this, Hong Kong’s first real New Yawk deli—those others don’t count, says this New Yorker.
The décor: It looks like the deli parked on that corner of 5th and Broadway for the past 30 years, except newer and much cleaner. And not in New York. For those unaware of the concept of delis, it’s a cross between a pizzeria, a cold-cuts counter and a convenience store—and they’ve even stuck in a bakery.
The food: Comfort food at its finest: New York–style pizza, reubens, Philly cheesesteaks, eggplant parmigiana, all as close to authentic as you can get. The best bit? They make their own roast beef and pastrami in house. Takes them a few days, but it’s completely worth it.
The drinks: Your regular lunchtime waters and sodas, but they do import A&W Root Beer and Cream Soda, as well as Arizona Iced Tea, straight from the States.
Why you’ll be back: If you’ve ever had any sense of appreciation for greasy, cheesy, sloppy American food, there’s no question. Those who haven’t should order up pastrami on a kaiser with plain cheddar, L&T, onions and a little bit of mayo, and don’t let them stick it in the oven. Ask them to grill the meat. You’ll never be able to look at another sandwich again.
