A quick guide on how to keep your skin dewy and glowing as dry weather hits the city. By HK Staff.

It was an overnight change—a month ago we were still trying to get the most out of our dehumidifier, then one day we woke up with itchy skin, dry eyes and chapped lips. Luckily, it doesn’t take much to save you from this yearly dry spell. Read and learn.

For Your Face

1. If you have dry skin—and let’s face it, who doesn’t in this weather?—use a mild cleanser on your face. Pick a gentle, water-soluble type rather than soap, as the latter strips the skin’s natural oils. Try Clarins’ new Gentle Foaming Cleanser for dry/sensitive skin ($180). Available at Clarins, Shop 1087, IFC Mall, Central, 2295-0827.

2. Before applying your usual face cream, try a hydrating essence. Crème de la Mer is of course the queen of face creams, but even more moisturizing is the label’s Hydrating Infusion ($780). Despite a light and watery texture, it keeps your skin moist the entire day. Available from La Mer counter, Lane Crawford, Times Square, Causeway Bay, 2110-9268.

3. Use a facial mask at least once a week to help boost your skin’s moisture. Our pick is Dior HydrAction Intensive Mask ($295). Its highly moisturizing texture helps rejuvenate the skin and also helps to set makeup. Available from Dior Beauty, G12, Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong, 2265-7728.

4. Too lazy to do it yourself? Let someone else do the job. Book the Elemis Exotic Cream Moisture Dew Facial ($800/60 minutes) at Beautiful Skin Centre, a moisture-boosting treatment that’s perfect for the dry weather. Book at 2877-8911 or www.beautifulskincentre.

For Your Hands
You can usually tell the cold weather is coming when your hands start feeling all tight. They’re also one of the first places to show your real age, so protect your mitts with a good hand cream. L’Occitane has been one of Hong Kong’s top sources for skincare and their latest Green Tea Hand Cream ($140) is our new favorite. It combines shea butter and the fragrance of green tea, creating a yummy-smelling and deeply nourishing balm. Available at L’Occitane, Shop 1090, IFC Mall, Central, 2234-7198.

For Your Body
First of all, don’t assume you don’t need sunscreen just because the weather is cooler. The sun’s rays are as strong as ever so if you’re planning a winter hike, be sure to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you head out.

Also, when you get out of the shower, trap the moisture on your damp skin by applying some oil before your regular body lotion. Our pick is the new Superbly Restorative Dry Oil from Kiehl’s ($260). Made with extracts of argan, sesame seed and avocado, it leaves a silky layer of protection. As an added bonus, it can also be used to smooth split ends. Available from Kiehl’s, Shop B25, The Landmark, Central, 2869-1798.
