With 40 percent of Hong Kong reserved as country park green and 37 campsites scattered around the city, you have no excuse not to go camping, especially now that the weather has cooled off. So grab our handy guide and hit the great outdoors.

Picking a Spot
With so many nice places to camp, it’s hard to choose a spot. So look for accessibility and facilities in addition the scenery. Good thing we’ve done a little picking for you... 

First Timers
Butterfly Beach Park Camping Site
Area 45, Lung Mun Rd., Tuen Mun
Next to Butterfly Beach in Tuen Mun, the campsite not only enjoys a magnificent view, but is easily accessible as well. This site features a barbecue area, jogging track, mini soccer pitch, volleyball court and basketball court.
Hygienic facilities Toilets
Getting there Take Light Rail routes no. 610, 615 or 615P to Melody Garden, and walk for a few minutes to the camping site.

Tung Lung Chau Campsite
Tung Lung Chau, off Clearwater Bay peninsula
Tung Lung Chau campsite is a 20-minute walk from the ferry pier. The island is famous among rock climbers thanks to its numerous natural walls that are great for practice. Facilities include barbecue pits, benches and tables, information boards, rubbish bins and pavilions.

Getting there Take ferry from Sam Ka Tsuen at Lei Yue Mun or Sai Wan Ho Ferry Pier. It takes about 20 minutes.

Ho Pui Campsite
Ho Pui, Tai Lam Country Park, Tai Lam
Voted one of the 10 best scenic spots in Hong Kong, this campsite on Hong Kong Island offers panorama views of Kam Tin and Pat Heung. A pathway circles Ho Pui Reservoir which features barbecue pits, benches, clothes lines and a pavilion.

Getting there Take minibus no. 71 (towards Shek Wu Tong Ho Pui) from Tai Hang Street in Yuen Long to Ho Pui Tsuen Terminus. The site is a 30-minute walk from the village.

Pui O Campsite
Shap Long, Lantau South Country Park, Lantau
This campsite is surrounded by lush vegetation and greenery lending it a quiet, lost-in-the-wilderness atmosphere. The Pui O beach, with its fine sand and sparkling water, is just 10 minutes away. Pui O campsite has about 50 vacancies and facilities, including barbecue pits, tables, benches, drains and even clotheslines.

Getting there Take any bus from Mui Wo and get off at Pui O. Follow the Chi Ma Wan Road and walk toward Ham Tin Village for about 40 minutes. Or you could take a taxi to Shap Long Old Village.

Hardcore Camping
Sam A Chung Campsite
Plover Cove Country Park, Tai Po
Located on a small hill by a stream, this is a gorgeous site to pitch a tent with a nearby rock cliff and sand pits. There are also fish and coral species in front of the Sam A Wan water. Facilities include barbecue pits, benches, tables, drains and clotheslines.

How to get there Take Minbus 20C from Tai Po Market Nam Shing Street to Wu Kau. Walk along the Bride’s Pool Road towards Wu Kau Tang. Then ahead towards Sam A Tsuen along the Wu Kau Tang country trail. The walk takes about an hour.

Cheung Sheung Campsite
Sai Kung West Country Park, Sai Kung
This gem is remote, situated on Cheung Sheung Plateau. A running stream passes through the grassy banks, which provide the best views of Shek Uk Shan, the highest mountain in Sai Kung. Facilities include barbecue pits, benches and tables
Hygienic facilities: Outhouse
Getting there: Minibus 7 from Sai Kung Town and get off at Cheung Sheung Country Trail starting point. Follow the signs to reach the campsite – it’ll take an hour.

Ngong Ping Campsite
Ma On Shan Country Park, Ma On Shan
The area on this plateau (a popular breeding ground for birds) is characterized by its flat land and lovely view. The site also features facilities such as barbecues, benches, tables and drains. And from here you can venture to the now defunct but still spooky Ma On Shan Mine.

Getting there From Yiu On Estate in Ma On Shan, take village minibus 84R and get off at Ma On Shan Village Terminus. Walk up Ma On Shan Country Trail for an hour to reach the site.
