Made of Honor

Made of Honor

September 5th, 2008

Take Julia Roberts in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and replace her with Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy) and—voila!—you have “Made of Honor,” Paul Weiland’s new romantic comedy.

Dempsey plays Tom, a serial womanizer so relationship-phobic that the only woman he can commit to is his platonic friend, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). The inventor of the coffee collar—the piece of cardboard that wraps around a takeaway coffee cup—his fortune is made and he has no other pastimes apart from chasing tail and playing b-ball with the boys (manwhoring aside, when did it become hot for our romantic heroes to have no real purpose in life?). Anyway, when Hannah gets engaged to Colin (Kevin McKidd), Tom realizes—of course—that he’s loved her all along and will stop at nothing to halt their wedding and claim her for himself.

Having basically stolen the plot directly from “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” you’d think the production team would put some level of effort into the rest of the film. But no, the movie comes off as an exercise in laziness (“Let’s see. How can we make a movie with the least amount of effort possible?”) Rather than portray any real depth in the characters’ relationships, a series of short cuts and flashbacks compensate for real emotion. Hannah and Tom are perfect for one another because they share the same tastes in food and shopping; Colin is unworthy of Hannah’s affections because he doesn’t let her eat off his plate. If we could actually warm to the characters, we might have something here, but instead we’re repelled. Do yourselves a favor and just watch “My Best Friend’s Wedding” again. At least it’ll save you the price of a movie ticket.
