Mingle Bar & Cafe
October 10th, 2008The buzz: With new management at the helm, this romantic Wellington watering hole has done away with its tapas-lounge motif and transformed into a chic cocktail bar, right next to the notorious Eden.
The décor: An ornate mix of Middle Eastern and European furnishings evoke an eclectic, modern mix-match feel. The plush interior features high ceilings, candlelit tables and dramatic oil paintings. The washroom has to be the largest in the neighborhood, complete with couch and elaborate chandelier. Fancy checking out who’s checking in next door? Perch yourself at one of the four alfresco tables out front.
The drinks: It's all about the boutique cocktails. Co-owner and head barman P.J. Jr. even offers lessons on how to prepare the tasty concoctions yourself ($100, includes two drinks, Mon-Thu, 6pm-9pm).
The crowd: Already a hit with the French community, the evenings usually play host to artsy musician types, but with in-house Wi-Fi access, expect to see corporate busybodies through much of the day.
The music: Light contemporary jazz early in the afternoon with latin and popular hits through the evening. Wednesdays are acoustic nights.
Why you’ll come back: Cocktail classes and a ginormous washroom with a couch. You won’t even need to rent a room next door. Rick Gangwani
