Re: The Redevelopment of HK

Re: The Redevelopment of HK

September 14th, 2007

Dear Reader,
As you can see, HK Magazine has been redeveloped. It's true, we could have done a better job. But our efforts were thwarted by Hong Kong's damned heritage protesters.
Our original redevelopment scheme was much broader. On advice from the Urban Renewal Authority (URA), we had planned to run a six-lane highway through the HK+ calendar and build a large bus station under the Savage Love column. The news section was to be razed and flattened, leaving the exterior wall as a façade for future generations to enjoy.
Of course, we would never renovate the magazine without carefully preserving the collective memory. For example, our classic 5-star review of “King Kong” has been placed in a Museum of Curiosities along with the feature, "Cyberport, Asia's World of Tomorrow." We were also sensitive to the concerns of various logo action groups. They were dispersed peacefully after we agreed to preserve our historic logo – it has now been dismantled with care and is currently stored in a Tuen Mun landfill. In the near future, we hope to reassemble it and float it in the harbor for the public’s enjoyment.
As a reader, you can look forward to Phase 2 of our redevelopment, where following the URA’s example, we plan to extend our redesign to include a 33-storey hotel and a 38-storey office block on pages 2 and 17 respectively. It will also no longer be free. It will cost $350.
For those who are not happy with our new look, you have only yourselves to blame. Plans outlining the demolition and reconstruction of the old HK had been on display from Saturday, September 1, 3:00am-3:05am in a tent on the Sokos Islands. If you couldn't be bothered to take part in the consultation process, it is not our fault. In the meantime, enjoy the magazine!
