During the sweltering heat of a Hong Kong summer, the perfect alfresco restaurant becomes the holy grail of dining—highly desired, but more a myth than reality. However, this summer we must admit we’ve found ours—and in a place so obvious you might even leave it off the short list. The Peak Lookout is more than just a tourist spot, or the ideal date restaurant (which it is)—the gloriously Victorian tram station-cum-garden, the attentive staff, and the heaping plates of delectable cuisine all come together for an unparalleled experience. But the real clincher is in the timing of your visit. Come in the evening of a hot summer day and catch the breeze rolling down from the Peak. Sit back with that gorgeous view, and tuck into the delectable and diverse cuisine. We particularly liked the oysters (the Kumamoto topped with salmon roe were exquisite), the escargot (creamy and subtle), and the meat-heavy mains. The barbecued lamb rack was juicy and perfectly seared and the Thai king prawns were as smooth as butter. Often disregarded as a tourist trap, The Peak Lookout is still one of our finest restaurants, and the perfect place to show that special someone the sights of the city from upon high in the clouds.
